self-supporting Mowital F40 foil with a thickness of
approximately 7 ug/cm2 as a target carrier.
(CSICR) CsI(Tl) and photomultiplier RCA-6655
(BCINT) The thickness of the metal layer was determined
from its stopping power against alpha, He3,and d
particles.
(A,A1409002,J.B.Marion+,J,PR,104,1402,1956) For
comparison purposes, the cross section of the
reaction Li6(p,alpha)He3 (60 degr., Ep=1 MeV) was
also measured in the way described in METHOD. It agrees
within error with the data given by Marion, et al.
The cross sections were determined absolutely to
within 20% according to the method of thickness
determination.

thick for 2-MeV protons.

sheets, and in this case no backing foil was
necessary. The latter method enabled uniform targets
of 0.001 inch thickness (1.4 mg/cm2) to be produced.
The targets were hung in the beam and stretched by a
small weight suspended from them.

A 2.5 cm x 3.8 cm diameter NaI(Tl) crystal mounted on

monitor at 130 degr.

on 10 ug/cm2 carbon backings. The thickness of the
6Li in the targets was of the order of 10 ug/cm2.

from 20 degr. to 80 degr. in the lab. system in steps
of around 5 degr. in most cases.
A solid state detector fixed at 90 degr. served as
monitor. Only the 3He pulses of the monitor were used

evaporating lithium metal enriched to 96% Li6 onto a
thin copper foil. The thickness of the material and
of the copper backing were measured by magnetically
analyzing the elastically scattered protons at a
bombarding energy of 2 Mev. At this bombarding energy
the copper foil 60+-3 keV thick and the 6LiOH
6.2+-0.2 keV thick.

(ERR-SYS) Total error in the absolute normalization
includes:
(ERR-2) the error in determining the monitor counter
solid angle 2%,
(ERR-3) beam current normalization 5%,
(ERR-4) error due to background subtraction from the
elastic proton yield in the monitor counter 5%,
(ERR-5) experimental error in the measured elastic
scattering cross section 4%.
