This thickness was selected to give 1019500100013 approximately 40% transmission in the 2-3 MeV region. 1019500100014 The surface density was measured to be 8.978 g/cm2. 1019500100015 PART-DET (N) 1019500100016 DETECTOR (SCIN) The neutron detector consisted basically of a 1019500100017 machined, polished NE-102 scintillator 11 cm in dia. 1019500100018 by 2 cm thick. 1019500100019 METHOD (TOF,TRN) Primary timing was performed between the 1019500100020 start signal from a non-intercepting beam monitor and 1019500100021 the neutron detector anode stop signal, which 1019500100022 registered the transversal of a particular neutron 1019500100023 over the fixed 23.35-m flight path. The carbon total 1019500100024 neutron cross section in the 2.05 to 3.4 MeV region 1019500100025 was measured with a linac peak electron current of 14 1019500100026 A, a repetition rate of 400 pps and a pulse width of 1019500100027 50 psec. 1019500100028 ANALYSIS The total carbon cross section in barns for a given 1019500100029 neutron energy (i.e., channel) was calculated from 1019500100030 the measured transmission data by the expression 1019500100031 sigma(total) = (A/(rhoX N)) ln[CO/CI] x 1024, where 1019500100032 A=atomic weight of carbon, rhoX=surface density of 1019500100033 carbon target, N=Avogadro's number, net count per 1019500100034 channel with carbon target out, net count per channel 1019500100035 with carbon target in.
