The samples were 1104700100011 made to cover the full length of the boat and nearly 1104700100012 the full width, but the thickness varied with the 1104700100013 capture cross section. For one-tenths of the samples 1104700100014 the thickness was less than that corresponding to 3 1104700100015 percent neutron capture, and no sample had a capture 1104700100016 thickness greater than 5 percent. For very strong 1104700100017 absorbers the sample was diluted to decrease the 1104700100018 possibility of lumps of large capture thickness; 1104700100019 sodium carbonate was a satisfactory diluent. Because 1104700100020 some of the samples required a wrapper, all the 1104700100021 samples were wrapped with a 200-mg piece of 1-mil 1104700100022 aluminum foil. The foil could be used as a tube to 1104700100023 enclose the powdered samples, as a simple wrapper 1104700100024 around solid samples, or as a flat piece to cover the 1104700100025 comparison gold foils. The few liquid samples and 1104700100026 chemically reactive samples were sealed in quartz 1104700100027 tubes and then covered with aluminum. 1104700100028 METHOD The ORNL pile oscillator measures the thermal neutron 1104700100029 capture cross section of a sample by moving the sample 1104700100030 so as to pulse periodically the neutron density 1104700100031 within the pile. It consists of a mechanical system 1104700100032 which oscillates a sample back and forth about once a 1104700100033 second through an annular, neutron-sensitive 1104700100034 ionization chamber, which is located in a constant 1104700100035 and intense neutron flux in the graphite reactor of 1104700100036 the pile. The local depletion of neutrons around the 1104700100037 capturing sample depends on the absorption by the 1104700100038 sample and can be used to compare absorptions. This 1104700100039 transient depletion pulses the ionization chamber 1104700100040 current, and these pulses are amplified, and 1104700100041 integrated by using the rectified pulses to charge a 1104700100042 condenser whose voltage can then be measured. The 1104700100043 ratio of the capture cross sections for two samples 1104700100044 is found from the weights which experimentally give 1104700100045 the same voltage response.
