The deuteron beam was monitored by 1113800100016 a graphite disk placed 1 inch in front of the target. 1113800100017 Both monitor and detector were irradiated 1113800100018 simultaneously to avoid corrections for bombardment 1113800100019 time and fluctuations in the beam intensity. The 1113800100020 detector was made by quartering a hollow graphite 1113800100021 cylinder (4.5 cm long) parallel to its axis. During 1113800100022 irradiation the four pieces were stacked together and 1113800100023 placed longitudinally with respect to the neutron 1113800100024 beam. The cross section of the detector was 1.9x1.6 1113800100025 cm2 and its center was 22.4 cm from the target. The 1113800100026 scatterers had a cross section of 1 sq. inch and were 1113800100027 placed midway between the target and detector.
