The neutrons 1387700100010 were then slowed down in a hydrogenous "source" and 1387700100011 pass down a paraffin and boron-carbide collimator to 1387700100012 the detector which has the form of an ionization 1387700100013 chamber. The pulses from the detector were passed to 1387700100014 an amplifier which was modulated so that the time 1387700100015 distribution of the pulses occurring in the 1387700100016 ionization chamber can be observed. Since the 1387700100017 measured time of flight for a neutron to pass from 1387700100018 the source to the detector was a function of the 1387700100019 energy, the time distribution of pulses in the 1387700100020 ionization chamber was a function of the sensitivity 1387700100021 of the detector for neutrons of various energies and 1387700100022 of the energy distribution of the neutron beam.
