The maximum bulge in these 1422600100014 samples was ~0.0025 cm. An H20 sample 8.9 cm wide by 1422600100015 11.4 cm high by 0.031 cm thick was used for all the 1422600100016 water measurements except at Eo=0.608 eV. The 0.608 1422600100017 eV scattering data were taken with a sample 7.6X 1422600100018 15.24X0.86 cm. The samples were inclined 45 degrees 1422600100019 to the incident beam direction. Transmissions in this 1422600100020 orientation were 0.915, 0.93, 0.935, and 0.825 for 1422600100021 initial energies of 0.1515, 0.304, 0.404, and 0.608 1422600100022 eV, respectively. Ice samples were made on a 1422600100023 0.158-cm-thick aluminum plate which was cooled by 1422600100024 conduction from the edges. Thin layers of water were 1422600100025 frozen onto this plate until the desired thickness 1422600100026 was reached. The final thickness of ice was adjusted 1422600100027 by scraping with a straight edge. Final dimensions of 1422600100028 the ice samples were 7.6 X 15.24 X ~0.038 cm. A 1422600100029 0.086-cm-thick sample was also used for one 1422600100030 experiment with E0=0.616 eV. Variability in the ice 1422600100031 layer thickness was ~lO% by this method of 1422600100032 manufacture. The ice samples were also inclined 45 1422600100033 degrees to the incident beam direction and sample 1422600100034 transmissions were 0.91 and 0.92 for E0=0.1515 and 1422600100035 0.304 eV, respectively. For E0=0.616 eV the 1422600100036 transmissions were 0.90 and 0.75. 1422600100037 METHOD (TOF) Time-of-flight (TOF) detectors located around 1422600100038 the sample in the horizontal plane recorded the TOF 1422600100039 spectra of scattered neutrons. Nine or ten TOF 1422600100040 detectors were arranged on flight paths of 1.0 or 1.5 1422600100041 m, at scattering angles from 15-165 degrees. A range 1422600100042 of incident neutron energies was used to provide high 1422600100043 resolution on scattered neutron energy over the 1422600100044 entire range of frequencies from below the hindered 1422600100045 rotational band to beyond the stretching vibrational 1422600100046 modes. 1422600100047 COMMENT The scattered neutron energy in subentries 2-60 was 1422600100048 recalculated as
