The fast 1432700100011 neutrons in the present measurements were obtained by 1432700100012 bombarding a titanium tritide target with deuterons 1432700100013 from the 4-MeV Van de Graaff accelerator of The 1432700100014 University of Texas for the range 14 to 21 MeV, and 1432700100015 from the tandem accelerator in the energy range above 1432700100016 21 MeV. 1432700100017 SAMPLE (6-C-12,NAT=0.9893) A spherical shell of pure graphite 1432700100018 of 6-in. o.d. and 3-in. i.d. 1432700100019 DETECTOR (SCIN,NAICR) The neutron detector, a cylinder of 1432700100020 stilbene 1 in. in length and 1 in. in diameter. The 1432700100021 gamma-ray measurements were made with a 2x2-in. NaI 1432700100022 crystal. 1432700100023 METHOD (REC) For each neutron energy, measurements were made 1432700100024 with the four geometrical arrangements. The 1432700100025 recoil spectra obtained under these conditions were 1432700100026 collected. Taking the midpoint of the slope at the 1432700100027 end of the spectrum as representative of the energy 1432700100028 of the neutrons responsible for the proton recoil 1432700100029 spectrum, a calibration curve of neutron energy 1432700100030 against channel number was plotted. Differential 1432700100031 elastic scattering measurements were made at angles 1432700100032 which would correspond to the emission of neutrons 1432700100033 in the center-of-mass system at angles near the zeros 1432700100034 of the first four Legendre polynomials (90,54.8,39.2, 1432700100035 and 30.5 degrees). 1432700100036 ANALYSIS (DIFFR) The proton recoil spectra obtained in the 1432700100037 four geometrical arrangements allow the following 1432700100038 four determinations of the number of neutrons 1432700100039 reaching the detector: (A) without shadow cone or 1432700100040 scatterer, (B) with the shadow cone shielding the 1432700100041 detector, (C) with the scatterer surrounding the 1432700100042 shielded detector, and (D) with the scatterer in 1432700100043 position without the shadow cone. The quantity 1432700100044 (C minus B)/(A minus B), the fraction of the neutrons 1432700100045 scattered and (A minus D)/(A minus B) the nonelastic 1432700100046 scattering, were determined. 1432700100047 MONITOR (6-C-12(N,EL)6-C-12,,SIG) Absolute cross sections were 1432700100048 therefore obtained using the known absolute 1432700100049 differential cross sections at 14 MeV. The geometrical 1432700100050 arrangement is not conducive to making absolute 1432700100051 measurements because the mean thickness of material 1432700100052 between the detector and any point where a neutron is 1432700100053 scattered is too great to make an approximate 1432700100054 calculation worthwhile. 1432700100055 MONIT-REF ((MONIT)11325001,J.B.Singletary+,J,PR,114,1595,1959) 1432700100056 CORRECTION Correction for contributions caused by neutrons 1432700100057 produced by deuterium. The neutron fluxes from both 1432700100058 tritium and deuterium targets were measured and the 1432700100059 yield of gamma-rays from the deuterium target was 1432700100060 obtained using the same geometry. Such corrections 1432700100061 were about 10%. For deuteron energies above 1.5 MeV, 1432700100062 neutrons emitted in the forward direction from the 1432700100063 D(d,n)3He reaction have sufficient energy to excite 1432700100064 the 4.43-MeV state in 12C by inelastic scattering 1432700100065 (threshold 4.80 MeV).
