Solid CH2-targets were used to A074900100012 avoid the complications, occurring notably at low A074900100013 pion energies, associated with a liquid hydrogen A074900100014 target, such as the presence of windows, the control A074900100015 and stability of the target volume and the A074900100016 impossibility of a 4-PI-detector geometry. The carbon A074900100017 background was subtracted in background runs on A074900100018 graphite targets. A074900100019 METHOD (TRN) The transmission experiments where the loss of A074900100020 negative pions on a hydrogen target was recorded. A074900100021 DETECTOR (SPEC) The detector for outgoing charged particles A074900100022 was a carefully designed nearly full 4Pi scintillator A074900100023 box 20 x 10 x 10 cm3 in size, consisting of six A074900100024 scintillator plates, 2 mm thick with the exception of A074900100025 the 'back' detector which was 7 mm thick, needed to A074900100026 achieve very high efficiency. The only opening in this A074900100027 box was the beam entrancehole in the 'front' detector, A074900100028 3 x 3 cm2 in size which encompassed the beam A074900100029 definition counter. All six detectors forming the box A074900100030 were read out on two ends via lucite light guides. A074900100031 Each detector was followed by an efficiency counter, A074900100032 3 mm thick. The data acquisition system which A074900100033 recorded the signals of all detectors for every A074900100034 incoming negative pion and thus allowed an off-line A074900100035 analysis on an event-by-event basis. A074900100036 CORRECTION The resulting raw cross sections were corrected for theA074900100037 (false) detection of gammas (6 to 8%) and of neutrons A074900100038 (1 to 4%) and for Dalitz decays(1.2%) . Corrections A074900100039 were also made for the decay of pions very close to A074900100040 the target where the time-of-flight discrimination A074900100041 was ineffective. Moreover, the known cross sections A074900100042 for radiative pion capture (~0.7 mb) had to be A074900100043 subtracted.
