C105700100013 INC-SPECT Protons generated and accelerated to 200 MeV in the C105700100014 BNL LINAC were injected into the Booster accelerator C105700100015 and brought to the desired energies of 0.84, 1.00, C105700100016 and 1.42 GeV. C105700100020 METHOD (ACTIV,EXTB) The activation of spallation targets of C105700100021 Pb and W has been studied for range-thick targets at C105700100022 proton energies of 0.84, 1.00, and 1.42 GeV. The C105700100023 published in Table II data for irradiations #3,9 are C105700100024 for 1 GeV. The production of radioactive nuclei per C105700100025 incident proton per cubic centimetre has been C105700100026 determined at six depths in the target material. C105700100027 COMMENT The Table II production yield values were modified by C105700100028 compiler using the recipe of C.E. Laird: Figures 16a, C105700100029 16b, etc. show that the results have units of C105700100030 nuclei/(proton*cm**3). These units were chosen to C105700100031 conform to the code calculations. To the best of my C105700100032 recollection, the volume in question was a circle of C105700100033 radius of 5 cm with the thickness of the foils(.021 C105700100034 cm for Pb and .014 cm for W). This was the volume of C105700100035 the foils in the larger target, so we assume no C105700100036 activation outside the target assembly. So, to get C105700100037 nuclei per proton, you should multiply by the volume C105700100038 of the foils! Consequently, the calculated target C105700100039 volumes for Pb and W are 1.6493 cm**3 and 1.0995 C105700100040 cm**3, respectively. C105700100041 CORRECTION Point-source efficiencies do not properly account for C105700100042 all efficiency and attenuation effects associated C105700100043 with the activation of extended samples by a broad C105700100044 beam of activating particles. These calculated C105700100045 corrections were used in conjunction with the C105700100046 point-source efficiencies to obtain the absolute C105700100047 activity of the W and Pb foils. The associated C105700100048 uncertainty was included in the total activation C105700100049 uncertainty for these foils. An associated uncertainty C105700100050 of 30% of the correction (a correction of 7% was C105700100051 assigned an error of 2.1%, or 30% of 7%) was assigned C105700100052 with each correction.
