C109500100009 INSTITUTE (1USAPUR) C109500100010 FACILITY (CYCLO,1USAANL) 152 cm cyclotron at Argonne National C109500100011 Laboratory. C109500100012 SAMPLE The target stack consisted of from 4 to 10 targets, C109500100013 alternating and in contact with forward catcher foils C109500100014 consisting of high-purity aluminum (99.999%) with an C109500100015 areal density of 7 mg/cm2. Aluminum degrading foils C109500100016 were inserted where appropriate. The targets were C109500100017 made by depositing a layer of barium nitrate on the C109500100018 above mentioned aluminum foil by an electrophoresis C109500100019 procedure. A suspension was prepared by mixing about C109500100020 5 mg of finely ground enriched barium nitrate (84.6% C109500100021 134Ba) in acetone. The suspension was placed in a C109500100022 Teflon cell and a potential of 400 V was maintained C109500100023 across copper electrodes for approximately one C109500100024 minute. The target thicknesses, determined by C109500100025 weighing samples of known area, were in the range C109500100026 from 1 to 3 mg/cm2. C109500100027 DETECTOR (NAICR) C109500100028 METHOD (ACTIV,STTA,CHSEP) After irradiation cerium was C109500100029 chemically separated. The disintegration rates of the C109500100030 isomers were determined by assay of the K X-ray C109500100031 activity of the samples. The measurements were C109500100032 performed with several thin NaI(Tl) detectors C109500100033 connected to single- channel analysers set to accept C109500100034 Ce and La K X-rays. C109500100035 ERR-ANALYS The (a,n) data at higher energies are C109500100036 uncertain by as much as 25% because of (a,2n) C109500100037 contribution. The random errors in the cross sections C109500100038 and recoil ranges include the uncertainties in C109500100039 (ERR-1,5.,10.) target thickness (5-10%). C109500100040 (ERR-2) chemical yields (5%). C109500100041 (ERR-3,1.,3.) disintegration rates: 1% for 137mCe, 3% C109500100042 for 137gCe. C109500100043 (ERR-4) The cross sections are subject to an C109500100044 additional systematic error of l0% because of C109500100045 uncertainties in the counter efficiencies and the C109500100046 decay scheme. Many of the random and all of the C109500100047 systematic errors cancel in the calculation of the C109500100048 isomer ratios so that these constitute our most C109500100049 accurate results. C109500100050 CORRECTION In addition, the (alpha,n) results at the higher C109500100051 energies are uncertain by as much as 25% because of C109500100052 the sizeable correction for the contribution from the C109500100053 135Ba(alpha,2n) reaction. C109500100054 COMMENT Compiler comment: The half-lives of Ce-137g and -m C109500100055 are swapped by authors compared to recent data C109500100056 sources. According to the ENSDF database 137Ce ground C109500100057 state T1/2=9.0 HR and isomeric state T1/2=34.4 HR. C109500100058 Authors give it the other way according to the C109500100059 assignment of 1970.
