C111600100016 METHOD (ACTIV,FPGAM) After the irradiations, the foils were C111600100017 generally placed about 30 cm from the front face of a C111600100018 lithium-drifted germanium detector. Some of the foils C111600100019 were permitted to decay for about one hour to allow C111600100020 short-lived activities to become negligible. In other C111600100021 cases, gamma-ray counting was initiated with only the C111600100022 five minute delay required to transfer the irradiated C111600100023 foil to the counting station. Gamma-ray spectra were C111600100024 accumulated sequentially for up to several days by a C111600100025 microcomputer-based multichannel analyzer and C111600100026 recorded on magnetic tape. The counting sequences C111600100027 were appropriately selected to permit half-life C111600100028 identification over a range from 2.5 min to 30 d. C111600100029 Several of the neutron-deficient nuclides decay C111600100030 primarily by alpha-particle emission rather than C111600100031 beta-decay. These products were measured with a C111600100032 Geneva wheel mechanism in which six carbon catcher C111600100033 foils are attached to a main disk at 60 degrees C111600100034 angles. The carbon foils caught the recoiling C111600100035 reaction products formed when the cyclotron beam C111600100036 bombarded a 100 microg/cm2 thorium foil. The C111600100037 alpha-decays of the spallation products captured by C111600100038 the carbon foils were detected by five high C111600100039 resolution silicon surface barrier detectors. C111600100040 ANALYSIS (DECAY) The gamma-ray spectra were analyzed with a C111600100041 light-pen interactive version of the program PEAKFIND C111600100042 which permitted the overlay off its and spectra on the C111600100043 CRT display screen. Alpha spectra were analyzed by a C111600100044 similar program ANALYSIS which permitted greater C111600100045 flexibility in adjustment of peak-shape parameters C111600100046 and allowed a greater number of peaks to be C111600100047 simultaneously analyzed. Once the energies and peak C111600100048 areas were measured for both the gamma-rays and C111600100049 alpha-particles the half-lives of the peaks present C111600100050 in the sequential spectra were determined to make C111600100051 positive identification of the radioisotopes present. C111600100052 Cross sections were calculated by using the C111600100053 appropriate corrections. C111600100054 CORRECTION The growth and decay corrections for each product and C111600100055 correcting for change in detector dead time during the C111600100056 sequential counting. In addition to providing a C111600100057 method of distinguishing between spallation and C111600100058 fission product activities, the use of two foil C111600100059 thicknesses also facilitated a method of correcting C111600100060 for recoiling fission and spallation products which C111600100061 escape from near the foil surface. Corrections for C111600100062 losses of fission products relied on using the ranges C111600100063 of fission products in uranium metal.
