C196200100010 DETECTOR (GELI,PROPC) Ge(Li) diode gamma-ray spectrometer, C196200100011 calibrated proportional counter for proton monitoring. C196200100012 PART-DET (P) Flux monitoring C196200100013 (DG) C196200100014 METHOD (GSPEC,EXTB,ACTIV) Liquid argon was bombarded with C196200100015 310-, 425-, and 578-MeV protons. Immediately after C196200100016 each irradiation, the liquid argon was transferred C196200100017 from the "irradiation" Dewar to a precooled C196200100018 "counting" Dewar and counted at varying distances up C196200100019 to 12 in. from a 3.6-cm3 Ge(Li) diode gamma-ray C196200100020 spectrometer. Pulses were stored in a Nuclear Data C196200100021 multichannel analyzer, utilizing 1024 channels C196200100022 calibrated at either 3 or 6 keV per channel. C196200100023 Successive counting periods of 20 to 8000 sec were C196200100024 taken for several hours after each irradiation so C196200100025 that decay curves were obtained for use in the data C196200100026 analysis. The counting efficiency as a function of C196200100027 gamma-ray energy deposited in the diode was obtained C196200100028 by calibration of known radionuclide sources which C196200100029 were standardized against IAEA standards. The C196200100030 "irradiation" Dewar was swabbed with alcohol and dry C196200100031 tissues which were counted to determine what, if any, C196200100032 quantity of spallation products had adhered to the C196200100033 sides of the Dewar. The empty, wiped Dewar was also C196200100034 counted to ensure that no spallation products C196200100035 remained. The collection efficiency of the swabs for C196200100036 the long-lived radioisotopes 24Na, 22Na, and 7Be was C196200100037 found to be greater than 98% based on a comparison of C196200100038 the activity of 24Na measured in the Dewar containing C196200100039 the argon and in the swabs. C196200100040 ERR-ANALYS (ERR-T) The cross section error values listed in the C196200100041 tables for the experimental data are consistent with C196200100042 the errors associated with counting statistics, C196200100043 counter calibration, proton flux, effective target C196200100044 thickness, background, and Compton production. C196200100045 (ERR-S) Since a rather large uncertainty is associated C196200100046 with the proton flux, the ratio of the cross section C196200100047 of the various radioisotopes to that of 38Cl is also C196200100048 given. Only statistical uncertainties remain in the C196200100049 ratios; hence, the ratios are much more precisely C196200100050 known. This uncertainty was calculated according to C196200100051 sigma(ratio)=(ratio)x[(sigmay/Dy)2+(sigma38/D38)2 ]1/2,C196200100052 where sigmay and sigma38 are the uncertainties, C196200100053 and Dy and D38 the disintegration rates of the various C196200100054 radioisotopes and 38Cl, respectively.
