C204900100016 METHOD (COINC,GSPEC) Excitation functions for elastic and C204900100017 inelastic scattering of protons on 56Fe were measured C204900100018 from Ep = 3.1 to 4.0 MeV and five scattering angles: C204900100019 89, 106, 124, 149, and 160 degrees. The spectra were C204900100020 stored on magnetic tape for off-line analysis. C204900100021 ANALYSIS (SHAPE) Background subtraction for the elastic peaks C204900100022 consisted of a linear fit to a few channels on each C204900100023 side of the peak. The elastic and inelastic C204900100024 scattering data were fit with a multilevel, C204900100025 multichannel R-matrix code. The program MULTI used to C204900100026 perform these analyses can simultaneously handle C204900100027 several hundred resonances of many different spins C204900100028 and parities, and can include the effects of up to 35 C204900100029 competing channels. In the present work, elastic C204900100030 scattering and inelastic scattering to the first 2+ C204900100031 state in 56Fe (Ex=0.85 MeV) are assumed to be the C204900100032 open channels. Shape analysis was sufficient to C204900100033 determine the orbital momentum of all but the weakest C204900100034 levels.
