C208000100014 METHOD A beam of 8 MeV deuterons from the Livermore variable- C208000100015 energy cyclotron was collimated so that it had a C208000100016 circular spot size with a 0.32 cm diam. at the target. C208000100017 The beam was monitored by means of a Faraday cup and C208000100018 a second detector kept fixed at 90 degrees with C208000100019 respect to the beam. In order to detect only protons C208000100020 from the 25Mg(d,p)26Mg reaction, use was made of the C208000100021 high positive Q-value for the reaction (Q = +8.89 C208000100022 MeV) and a gold foil (196 mg/cm2 thick) was placed C208000100023 between the target and detector. The protons passed C208000100024 through this foil, but all other charged particles C208000100025 were stopped. Most of the data presented in this C208000100026 report were obtained with the gold foil directly in C208000100027 front of a collimator with a 0.48 cm diam. hole C208000100028 placed 7.6 cm in front of the collimator which C208000100029 defined the solid angle of the detector. Finally, C208000100030 some runs were made with no gold foil. This made it C208000100031 possible to obtain the deuteron elastic scattering dataC208000100032 and set the absolute normalization of the proton data.
