C209500100010 Both Si metal and SiO2 foils were used. C209500100011 PART-DET (P) C209500100012 DETECTOR (SCIN) The detectors were 0.025 inch thick CsI(Th) C209500100013 crystals on Dumont-6291 photomultiplier tubes. C209500100014 METHOD The absolute cross-section scale was determined in C209500100015 the following way. It was not possible to make an C209500100016 absolute determination of target thickness by C209500100017 weighing. Therefore the thickness of a standard C209500100018 target was determined from the Rutherford cross C209500100019 section of Si for protons between 1 and 2 Mev by C209500100020 measuring the elastic scattering in that range at a C209500100021 number of angles and energies at which the total C209500100022 cross section could legitimately be assumed to be C209500100023 equal to the Rutherford cross section. All target C209500100024 thicknesses were determined by counting elastically C209500100025 scattered protons at 3.2 Mev and 165 degrees c.m. C209500100026 using 90.0 mb/steradian as the cross section. 3.2 Mev C209500100027 and 165 degrees c.m. were picked because the elastic C209500100028 scattering counting rate there was known to be C209500100029 insensitive to fluctuations in energy and small C209500100030 errors in setting the angle.
