C210000700008 METHOD Four detectors were used. They were placed at 82, 118, C210000700009 135, and 165 degrees which corresponds to 90, 125.3, C210000700010 140.8, 167.2 degrees in the center of mass system of C210000700011 28Si + alpha. The differential cross section is C210000700012 determined as sigma = (Y cosine theta)/(N n t omega), C210000700013 where Y is the yield in the number of counts, theta C210000700014 is the angle between a perpendicular to the target C210000700015 and the beam direction, N is the number of target C210000700016 nuclei per cm3, n is the total number of incident C210000700017 particles, t is target thickness in cm, omega is C210000700018 solid angle subtended by the detector collimator in C210000700019 radians. C210000700020 ERR-ANALYS (ERR-T) The total uncertainty in the differential C210000700021 cross section was a sum of all the above and equal C210000700022 6.4%. The way uncertainties can enter into the cross C210000700023 section is through the fluctuation in yield, the C210000700024 uncertainty in determining the angle theta, the C210000700025 ambiguity in the target thickness due to C210000700026 non-uniformity of the target, and uncertainties in the C210000700027 total number of particles due to errors in charge C210000700028 collection, since n is simply the total charge C210000700029 collected divided by the charge per particle. N, being C210000700030 the number of nuclei per cm3, is constant, and will C210000700031 not contribute to any uncertainties. All independent C210000700032 uncertainties were added in quadratures. C210000700033 (ERR-S) 1.8% is statistical fluctuation in yield. C210000700034 (ERR-1) Uncertainty in charge collection was 0.35%. C210000700035 (ERR-2) Uncertainty in the solid angle 0.04%.
