C219300100012 DETECTOR (SPEC) The Momentum Achromat Recoil Spectrometer (MARS)C219300100013 was used to momentum analyze the reaction products and C219300100014 suppress the beam particles in spectrometer focal C219300100015 plane. The desired reaction products were tuned throughC219300100016 MARS by estimating the most probable charge state. C219300100017 (SISD) Reaction products that reached the detector C219300100018 chamber implanted into a 50mm x 50mm Micron model X1 C219300100019 position-sensitive silicon detector with 16 C219300100020 position-sensitive vertical strips and a full-energy C219300100021 signal. C219300100022 (MCPLT) Alpha decays were discriminated from C219300100023 implantation events via a large-area microchannel C219300100024 plate (MCP) detector. Incoming ions passed through a C219300100025 0.6 mu-m Al foil and ejected secondary electrons, C219300100026 which were steered onto the plates of the MCP by an C219300100027 electrostatic grid. Coincident signals in the SISD C219300100028 and MCP indicated a recoil event, while a signal only C219300100029 in the SISD indicated alpha decays. C219300100030 METHOD (COINC) Coincidence between position sensitive Si C219300100031 detector and microchannel plate detector indicated C219300100032 recoil event. Reaction products were identified by C219300100033 characteristic alpha decay energies. Decay events C219300100034 were characteristic solely by Si detector signal. C219300100035 (ACTIV) Reaction products were implanted in Si strip C219300100036 detector and identified according to energy of alpha C219300100037 particle from compound nucleus decay C219300100038 INC-SOURCE Beams of 45Sc6+ were delivered from the K500 cyclotron C219300100039 with intensities on-target of 0.5 - 8.0 pnA.
