During deposition the thickness D063600100016 of the V2O5 was monitored continuously and was D063600100017 determined more accurately subsequently by D063600100018 Rutherford backscattering and energy-loss D063600100019 measurements. Targets of 37+-3 mu-g/cm2 and D063600100020 15+-2mu-g/cm2 were used (corresponding to an energy D063600100021 loss of ~200keV and ~100keV, respectively, for E-lab D063600100022 = 30 MeV 16-O ions).The thicker targets were used D063600100023 for excitation functions in steps of delta-E-c.m.= D063600100024 100keV and the thinner ones for steps of 50 keV. D063600100025 Beam currents at the target were typically 45 D063600100026 particle nA. D063600100027 METHOD (EDE) D063600100028 DETECTOR (IOCH)delta-E - E gas ionisation chamber. The D063600100029 ionisation detector was coupled to the lid of a D063600100030 small scattering chamber (~20 cm diameter) which was D063600100031 tilted with respect to the base of the chamber. D063600100032 A monitor detector placed at 45. degr.(lab. sys) was D063600100033 used at all incident energies to normalise between D063600100034 runs on the Rutherford elastic scattering from D063600100035 vanadium. D063600100036 ERR-ANALYS (DATA-ERR) Absolute cross sections accurate to +-10% D063600100037 were obtained by normalising the 160 + 160 elastic D063600100038 scattering to the Mott cross section at forward D063600100039 scattering angles for a low beam energy.
