Momentum spectra of the 3He particlesF085200100013 were detected by a multi-wire gas proportional chamber F085200100014 with delay-line read-out which used drift-time F085200100015 information to interpolate between anode wires. The F085200100016 counter was mounted in the focal plane of the F085200100017 spectrometer and its position-sensitive area was 800 F085200100018 mm*72 mm. A 5 mm thick plastic scintillation counter, F085200100019 behind the focal plane, was used for particle F085200100020 identification. F085200100021 SAMPLE A self-supporting 740 mu-g/cm2 thick nickel target F085200100022 enriched to 99.8% in 58Ni. The thickness of the target F085200100023 was determined by weighing and also by measuring the F085200100024 energy loss of 5.802 MeV a-particles from a 244Cm F085200100025 source. The difference between these two measurements F085200100026 was about 10% and the average of the two results was F085200100027 used for determination of the absolute cross section. F085200100028 High-resolution energy spectra and relative F085200100029 cross sections were measured using a thin (140 F085200100030 mu-g/cm2) nickel target, obtained by evaporation of F085200100031 enriched (99.8%) 58Ni material onto a 10 mu-g/cm2 thickF085200100032 carbon backing.
