Particles with greater energies F088400100012 passed through a slit sealed by a thin (10 mu-m) mylar F088400100013 film and were detected by a telescope mounted outside F088400100014 the scattering chamber. Thus it was possible to place F088400100015 in front of the detectors various aluminium foils of F088400100016 the required thickness to absorb a great number of F088400100017 alpha particles scattered at small angles. F088400100018 SAMPLE The targets, which were 0.3 to 0.4 mg/cm2 thick, were F088400100019 made by vacuum evaporation of lithium carbonate, F088400100020 enriched in 6Li to 92%, onto a silver or gold backing F088400100021 0.25 mg/cm2 thick. The target was placed at the centre F088400100022 of a 18 cm diameter scattering chamber at a distance F088400100023 of 90 cm from the foils. F088400100024 METHOD (EDEG) The beam energy was varied by means of stopping F088400100025 aluminium foils 5.65 mu-m thick. F088400100026 (EDE) F088400100027 (BCINT) F088400100028 ERR-ANALYS (DATA-ERR) Absolute cross section error. The F088400100029 accuracy of the absolute values is mainly due to the F088400100030 accuracy of measurement of the target thickness and theF088400100031 uncertainty of the target composition because of the F088400100032 possible disintegration of lithium carbonate when the F088400100033 target is heated by an alpha particle beam. F088400100034 The statistical errors of the differential cross F088400100035 sections for the 6Li(a,d)8Be reaction mostly did not F088400100036 exceed 10%. The cross sections for the d1 group were F088400100037 measured somewhat less accurately (~15%) since this F088400100038 group occurs against the background of the continuous F088400100039 spectrum of deuterons from the 6Li(a,ad)4He and F088400100040 6Li(a,a)6Li* -> a+d reactions.
