F089500100009 DETECTOR (TELES,SOLST) Identification systems consisting of F089500100010 dE-E solid state detector telescopes were used at F089500100011 forward angles. At medium angles, where the decreasing F089500100012 energies of Be-9 impeded the use of the telescopes, theF089500100013 background was eliminated by measuring anticoincidencesF089500100014 between a thin detector having a thickness just F089500100015 exceeding the range of the 9Be ions and a thick F089500100016 detector placed immediately behind it. At large angles,F089500100017 where the energy of the scattered ions is too low to F089500100018 discriminate between the background in the thin F089500100019 detector, coincidences between the Be-9 particles and F089500100020 the recoil nuclei were used for identification. The F089500100021 distances and entrance slits of both detectors were so F089500100022 chosen that, in all the measurements, the solid angle F089500100023 was determined by the Be-9 detector. F089500100024 SAMPLE All targets showed a considerable carbon buildup of F089500100025 about 0.8 mu-g/cm2 per hour with a 100 nA Be-9 beam.
