For use primarily in measuring the F096300100016 excitation functions, an additional detector (the fixedF096300100017 detector was an RCA model C-4, 0.2 cm2 active area withF096300100018 a 450 mu depletion depth) was mounted at the 135 degr. F096300100019 port hole on a sliding arm that allowed the detector toF096300100020 be positioned anywhere from 1 to 25 cm from the target.F096300100021 Gold or tantalum foils of thickness sufficient to stop F096300100022 the elastically scattered deuterons were mounted in F096300100023 front of the detectors. F096300100024 METHOD (BCINT) F096300100025 SAMPLE Natural silicon or silicon enriched (68% 30Si) F096300100026 with 30Si was evaporated onto the backings. F096300100027 Target backings were constructed of gold leaf F096300100028 (190 mu-g/cm2) mounted over 1.3-cm apertures in F096300100029 tantalum blanks. The thickest targets employed in the F096300100030 experiment were less than 10 keV thick to 2 MeV F096300100031 deuterons. F096300100032 ERR-ANALYS (DATA-ERR)The error in the scale of the cross sections,F096300100033 a root-square value derived from uncertainties in the F096300100034 target thickness, charge collection, solid angle F096300100035 measurements, and counting statistics, were taken into F096300100036 account. The extent to which oxygen, visible in the F096300100037 experimental spectra, contributed to the weight of the F096300100038 sample, is an unknown quantity, introducing a maximum F096300100039 possible correction of less than 10%.
